Getting enough quality sleep is one of the most important things we can do for our health, recovery, and overall well-being. Between marathon training, work, writing books, and family life, I try to make the most of the hours I spend asleep.

Unfortunately, I’m also a fairly light sleeper.

During the summer, my kids often stay up later than I do. Our television downstairs, voices in the hallway, or simply someone walking around the house can be enough to wake me. White noise has helped over the years, but it doesn’t always block enough sound.

When Fitnexa reached out and asked if I’d like to review their SomniPods 3 sleep earbuds, I was genuinely interested. Unlike traditional wireless earbuds designed primarily for music, these are specifically built for sleeping. They’re designed to be comfortable enough to wear all night while helping block outside noise, play relaxing sounds, and even track your sleep.

After sleeping with them for about two weeks, here’s what I found.

Disclosure: Fitnexa provided me with the SomniPods 3 free of charge for review. They had no input into this review, did not preview it before publication, and all opinions are my own based on about two weeks of real-world use.

What Are the SomniPods 3?

Fitnexa SomniPods 3 in case

The SomniPods 3 are wireless sleep earbuds designed to help you fall asleep faster, stay asleep longer, and better understand your sleep habits. Unlike traditional earbuds, they’re extremely low profile, allowing you to comfortably sleep on your side without the earbuds pressing painfully into your ear.

The companion Fitnexa app includes a large library of sleep sounds, sleep tracking, and coaching features. An optional AI Plus subscription adds personalized coaching and additional AI-driven recommendations, although the core functionality works without it.

Think of them as a combination of:

  • Sleep earbuds
  • White noise machine
  • Sleep tracker
  • Relaxation app

all packaged into one product. You can purchase them directly from Fitnexa.

Some of the highlights include:

  • Ultra-low-profile earbuds designed for side sleepers
  • USB-C charging case
  • Multiple ear tip and stabilizer sizes
  • Active noise cancellation (ANC)
  • Sleep tracking
  • Sleep position tracking
  • Extensive sleep sound library
  • Optional AI-powered sleep coaching
  • Bluetooth audio playback

The SomniPods 3 are also lightweight. At only a few grams each, they’re noticeably smaller and lighter than most wireless earbuds I’ve used.

My first impression was positive before I even paired the earbuds. Everything arrived well packaged, and the presentation felt premium.

Inside the box you’ll find:

  • SomniPods 3 earbuds
  • Charging case
  • USB-C charging cable
  • Quick start instructions
  • Multiple silicone ear tips
  • Multiple stabilizing wing tips

I especially appreciated was the number of included fit options. Most earbuds include two or three ear tip sizes. Fitnexa includes enough combinations that almost anyone should be able to find a comfortable fit. That’s particularly important because proper fit affects both comfort and noise isolation.

Pairing the earbuds with my phone was quick and straightforward.

The Fitnexa app guided me through the initial setup and offered two different onboarding experiences. You can answer a few basic questions and start using the earbuds immediately, or complete a more detailed sleep profile if you’d like more personalized recommendations later.

The onboarding process felt polished and didn’t take long.

One thing you’ll notice during setup is the optional AI Plus subscription. Fitnexa includes a three-month trial, after which the subscription is currently listed at $9.99 per month.

Fortunately, the earbuds don’t require the subscription to function. Core playback, sleep tracking, and other major features remain available without it.

Comfort is where the SomniPods 3 impressed me the most. I’ve owned quite a few wireless earbuds over the years, including multiple generations of Google Pixel Buds, and these are easily the most comfortable earbuds I’ve worn.

Even using the default ear tips, they fit securely without feeling tight. More importantly, I could comfortably sleep on either side. If you’ve ever tried sleeping with normal earbuds, you’ve probably experienced that uncomfortable pressure against your pillow.

That wasn’t an issue withe the SomniPods 3. The earbuds sit low enough inside the ear that after a few minutes I largely forgot I was wearing them. Even after wearing them throughout the night, I rarely felt the need to adjust them. And, they stayed in place. I never woke up searching through the sheets for a missing earbud.

💡 What Surprised Me Most

Although the SomniPods 3 can function as standard Bluetooth earbuds, I spent almost all of my time using them for sleep. The app includes an extensive library of:

  • White noise
  • Brown noise
  • Pink noise
  • Rain
  • Ocean waves
  • Rivers
  • Waterfalls
  • Other ambient environments

You can also combine different sounds together and control how long they continue playing after you fall asleep. After experimenting with several options, I eventually settled on a combination of white noise and brown noise.

As someone who wakes easily, I noticed two improvements. First, I generally fell asleep faster. Second, I woke up fewer times during the night. That’s obviously a subjective observation rather than a scientific measurement, but it was consistent enough over the two weeks that I noticed the difference.

Because I’m currently training for marathons, quality sleep is especially important for recovery. While I can’t claim the earbuds directly improved my recovery, I do believe they helped me get more consistent, uninterrupted sleep, which certainly supports recovery after difficult workouts.

These are designed primarily for sleeping rather than critical music listening. Even so, I occasionally used them for audiobooks. Speech sounded clear, and I had no trouble understanding narration.

Would I choose these over dedicated music earbuds? Probably not, but the sound and noise canceling are good enough that I still enjoy listening to music with them.

Would I happily use them for audiobooks, podcasts, meditation sessions, or sleep sounds Absolutely.

The Fitnexa app is packed with features. That’s both its greatest strength and its biggest weakness. On the positive side, it offers:

  • Sleep tracking
  • Sleep scores
  • Sleep stage estimates
  • Sleep position tracking
  • Sound library
  • Relaxation content
  • Sleep coaching
  • Historical trends

I especially enjoyed reviewing my sleep score each morning and comparing it to my the data I get from my Polar Vantage V3 fitness watch. The app estimates your sleep quality and presents your nightly data in an easy-to-read format.

One particularly interesting feature is sleep position tracking. The app estimated how much time I spent sleeping on my left side versus my right side and also tracked movement throughout the night. That’s information I haven’t seen in other products I’ve used.

I had no idea I tossed and turned that much, but I am mostly a side sleeper.

The Learning Curve

The downside is that there’s simply a lot going on. After two weeks I was comfortable navigating the app, but during the first few days I occasionally found myself hunting for features.

Nothing felt broken. There are simply enough capabilities that the interface can initially feel busy. I suspect most users will become comfortable with it after a week or so.

I also noticed that some relaxation content is reserved for subscribers, which may disappoint users expecting every sound and coaching feature to be included with the hardware purchase.

Battery life exceeded my expectations. Using the earbuds nightly for sleep, I averaged roughly a week of use before needing to recharge the case. Charging happens through USB-C, which has become my preferred standard for nearly everything.

I never felt like battery life limited how I used the earbuds.

I think these are an excellent fit for:

  • Light sleepers
  • Side sleepers
  • Frequent travelers
  • Anyone wanting better sleep tracking
  • People who have struggled with uncomfortable sleep earbuds
  • Runners and athletes who prioritize recovery

If you’re primarily looking for premium music earbuds, I’d probably steer you elsewhere. If your primary goal is sleeping better, however, these are purpose-built for exactly that.

Who Should Skip the SomniPods 3?

The SomniPods 3 aren’t for everyone. You may want to consider a different product if:

  • Your primary use is listening to music throughout the day.
  • You don’t plan to use sleep tracking or relaxation features.
  • You’re looking for the lowest-cost wireless earbuds.
  • You prefer not to use a companion app.
  • You don’t like the idea of some premium content requiring a subscription.

What I Liked, and What Could Be Better

Pros 👍 Cons 👎
Extremely comfortable, even for side sleepers Companion app has a learning curve due to its many features
Excellent selection of ear tips and stabilizers for finding the right fit Some sleep sounds, coaching, and AI features require an optional subscription
Secure fit that stayed in place all night during my testing More expensive than many standard wireless earbuds
Effective active noise cancellation and passive noise isolation Audio quality is good for audiobooks and relaxation, but music isn’t their primary focus
Large library of relaxing sleep sounds and ambient audio Requires the mobile app to access sleep tracking and most advanced features
Sleep tracking includes sleep score, sleep stages, movement, and sleep position analysis
Good battery life with about a week between charging the case in my testing
Attractive, compact USB-C charging case
Easy setup and Bluetooth pairing
Comfortable enough that I often forgot I was wearing them

After using the Fitnexa SomniPods 3 for two weeks, I’ve been pleasantly surprised. The feature that impressed me most wasn’t the sleep tracking or even the large library of relaxing sounds. It was the comfort. For the first time, I found a pair of earbuds I could comfortably wear while sleeping on either side throughout the night.

The combination of effective noise blocking, customizable sleep sounds, solid sleep tracking, and thoughtful design made them something I actually looked forward to using each evening.

The app could certainly be simplified in places, and I’d prefer to see more of the relaxation content included without a subscription. Those are valid criticisms, but neither outweighed the overall experience.

Would I buy them with my own money? Yes.

They’re more expensive than many wireless earbuds, but they’re also designed to solve a very specific problem. If you’re a light sleeper, travel frequently, struggle with noisy environments, or simply want more insight into your sleep habits, I think the SomniPods 3 are well worth considering.

For me, they’ve earned a place on my nightstand.

Can you sleep comfortably on your side with the Fitnexa SomniPods 3?

Yes. This was the feature that impressed me the most. They’re the most comfortable earbuds I’ve personally used for sleeping, and I had no issues sleeping on either side. Unlike standard wireless earbuds, they sit low enough in the ear that I often forgot I was wearing them.

Can you use the SomniPods 3 as regular Bluetooth earbuds?

Yes. They work for listening to music, podcasts, and audiobooks just like standard Bluetooth earbuds. I primarily used them for audiobooks and found voices clear and easy to understand. That said, they’re designed first and foremost for sleep rather than premium music listening.

Do you need the Fitnexa app?

Yes. The app is required if you want to access the sleep sounds, sleep tracking, sleep analysis, and other advanced features that make the SomniPods 3 different from regular earbuds.

Is the optional AI Plus subscription required?

No. The earbuds work without a subscription, including the core sleep features. However, Fitnexa reserves some AI coaching and premium relaxation content for subscribers. New users currently receive a three-month trial before deciding if the additional features are worth paying for.

How long does the battery last?

In my testing, the earbuds easily lasted through a full night’s sleep, and I only needed to recharge the charging case about once a week. Your battery life may vary depending on how you use features like active noise cancellation and audio playback.

Do they stay in your ears while sleeping?

They did for me. The included selection of ear tips and stabilizers makes it easy to find a secure fit. Throughout my testing, I never woke up searching through the sheets for a missing earbud.

Are the SomniPods 3 better than sleeping with AirPods or Pixel Buds?

If your primary goal is sleeping, yes. Traditional earbuds are designed for music and phone calls, while the SomniPods 3 are purpose-built for overnight comfort, sleep tracking, and relaxation. I own multiple generations of Pixel Buds, and the SomniPods 3 were noticeably more comfortable for sleeping, especially when lying on my side.

Are the SomniPods 3 worth the price?

They’re more expensive than many standard wireless earbuds, but they also provide features those earbuds don’t, including sleep tracking, sleep coaching, sleep position analysis, and a large library of relaxing sounds. If your primary goal is improving your sleep, I think the additional cost is justified.

Who should buy the Fitnexa SomniPods 3?

I’d recommend them for:

  • Light sleepers
  • Side sleepers
  • Frequent travelers
  • People interested in learning more about their sleep habits
  • Athletes who prioritize quality sleep and recovery
  • Anyone who has struggled to find comfortable earbuds for sleeping

Final HomeTechHacker Rating
